Digital reading circle

Sharemagazines is the digital version of the familiar "reading circle". Current issues of over 400 magazines and newspapers are available.

The service can be used by any visitor who is inside the library.

Energy cost monitor

The energy cost monitor exposes the power guzzlers around the house. Plugged in between the socket and the appliance you want to check, it shows how much electricity that appliance uses.

So you can see whether your washing machine draws power even when switched off, for instance. Or you can work out reliably what your fridge costs to run each year. That gives you something to go on if you are thinking of replacing an appliance.

Luka® - the innovative reading tutor

Being read to every day gives children a clear head start in learning to read – and the stories they hear fire their imagination and creativity.

How good, then, to have a small reading companion: Luka®, the likeable owl, is quite unique, because he reads printed, illustrated children's books aloud. Luka is clever enough to recognise every single page and read from wherever the book happens to be open.

The syllable method

The German language is built on syllables. A good 85 per cent of simple texts consist of standard words. These follow very simple, clearly structured rules that can be explained or derived from the syllable structure. In books that use the syllable method, the individual syllables are marked in alternating colours (red and blue) and so grouped into manageable clusters of letters that a child can decode more easily.

Reading by syllables also helps children read for meaning. The method is supported by numerous movement exercises, such as clapping out syllables or walking in time with them, which sharpen a child's sense of their own body.

The colour coding of the individual syllables in our syllable-method books makes learning to read easier for children in years 1 and 2:

  1. Each word is divided into clusters of letters and so is easier to take in than the whole word.
  2. Those clusters are units of a very particular kind: they mark the spoken syllables. Those are the key to reading and understanding a word correctly.

Stapelsteine & balance boards

(2 bags of 12 Stapelsteine each + 2 balance boards)

Ideal for keeping children busy on a rainy day, for instance (certified from age 1 and awarded the „spiel gut“ seal). But the Stapelsteine can be used at children's birthday parties, outdoors or in the water too, and offer endless ways to play and move. Try the free Stapelstein app as well, with over 60 game ideas.

The colourful Stapelsteine and the balance board offer an active, sustainable alternative that makes room for movement and creativity in a limited space. Playing with Stapelsteine means living out movement and creativity with the whole body. That way children can make the most of everything in them.
