Free wi-fi - internet at no cost

In 1996 the library was the third KöB to have a website of its own.

The following year, in 1997, it was the first KöB to offer its visitors internet access.

Since July 2013 we have again been the first KöB — and the first library in the area — to offer free wireless internet access over wi-fi.

In 2020, thanks to the Wissenswandel funding programme, the whole wi-fi infrastructure was expanded and brought up to date.

Questions about free wi-fi

What do I need?

All you need is a wi-fi capable device — a smartphone, tablet or laptop. You do not have to be a reader with a library card.

What does it cost me?

Nothing. It is free to use.

What exactly do I have to do?

  1. Search for available wireless networks and choose "Hotspot Buecherei".
  2. Accept the terms of use and you can start browsing.

You are not obliged to give a name or an email address, and no registration is needed. Nor do you have to collect a ticket from the loans desk any more.

Where exactly can I get online?

You can pick up our wi-fi throughout the library.

How long can I stay online?

You can use the internet without limit during opening hours.

My battery is nearly flat. Can I charge it here?

Gladly. Just use one of the free sockets. Please don't create a trip hazard for other users, though. Sockets are used at your own risk. If you have forgotten your charger or cable, you can borrow one at the loans desk.

How do I protect my device?

Problems with computer viruses cannot be caused directly by our wi-fi; they come from the internet, often disguised as email attachments. The library therefore cannot be held liable for any "infection" of your device. Do make sure you have anti-virus software and a personal firewall installed and switched on, and that both are up to date, as is your operating system.

What should I bear in mind when using the wi-fi?

Other readers must not be disturbed, so no loud clattering of keys and no playing of sound files (except through headphones). Content harmful to young people must not be called up. Illegal data and software — anything infringing copyright, for instance — must of course not be downloaded. No liability is accepted for any damage to your devices' hardware or software arising during wi-fi use. The same applies to theft or damage. On no account leave your device unattended.

Is internet access restricted?

Websites harmful to young people are blocked by a youth protection filter, and as a rule only browsing the web and sending and receiving email are possible.
