Media literacy for young people

Media literacy is not something anyone is born with — you included! Although you are growing up in a digital world and seem to handle its possibilities effortlessly, you too face any number of challenges, from fake news to keeping within the law on things like copyright.

Our interactive course supports you in developing your media literacy. It helps you answer questions such as: how do I deal with fake news? How do I tell whether a website can be trusted? What does copyright actually mean, and what are image rights and trade marks?

Even if you are online as a matter of course and seemingly without effort, what is usually missing is solid knowledge about the possibilities and the dangers of that use. The subjects and examples meet you in the world you know, and reach you where you mostly are anyway — online!

Questions about media literacy

What does the online course cover?

Introduction: here you learn what the course covers and how the modules are built up. It explains how to navigate the course, how to use it as learning material and which skills each module builds.

The internet as a source: after a short overview of Google, you first make yourself familiar with the typical marks of a reputable website. The use of advertising is analysed and thought through critically.

Who owns what on the internet? This module is about keeping within the law. That concerns not only the source of information itself but everything it contains — visual, audio and audiovisual material — with an eye to copyright and intellectual property.

Fake news: this module answers the following questions:[nbsp]Is what the media are trying to sell me really true? Is what I can see and read there true? Or is it all just fake?

What do I need in order to use it?

You need nothing more than a valid library card.

What does it cost me?

Nothing. Thanks to our Friends of the Library, our digital services are free to use.

Where and how can I use it?

You can use it on any PC or mobile device at home, at work or out and about – provided you have internet access: medienkompetenz-login.owbib.de.

What are my login details?

You log in with the details you already know: your reader number and your personal password, the same as for your reader account in our online catalogue.
