Annex: data protection

Annex to the library regulations:

Data protection

Please note: this English version is a reading aid. Only the German Datenschutzerklärung is legally binding.

The Bücherei Eyachtal - Catholic public library (KöB) St. Jakobus (Owingen Library) is an institution of the Roman Catholic parish of Zollern and is therefore subject to the data protection rules of the Catholic Church, in particular the Act on Church Data Protection (KDG), which applies the EU GDPR within the Catholic Church in Germany.

In this privacy notice we inform you about the use of personal data at our library. We undertake to protect visitors' privacy and to handle and use personal data in accordance with the KDG.

What do we use your data for?

We need your data to handle the lending and return of items and to contact you (for example to let you know when an item you reserved is available, if you wish). The legal basis is § 6(1) KDG, in particular points (b), (c) and (g): these are pre-contractual measures, the data serves the legitimate interests of the library (proper lending), and you consent to the use of this personal data by acknowledging the library rules with your signature.

What data is collected?

Reader number, date of first registration, first name, surname, address, date of birth, telephone numbers (optional), email address (optional), at the reader's request: activation of the borrowing history.

This data is used solely for the library's purposes (lending, reminders, information about reservations, loan periods running out, service and event information). If you want to sign up to the Onleihe or to online databases such as Brockhaus and Munzinger, or to tigerbooks, or to use the BVS eOPAC, passing data to those service providers may be necessary (see below).

BVS eOPAC / bibkat app

Our library runs an online catalogue, BVS eOPAC, on the internet. Your user account can be enabled for this service so that you can view your account online, to renew an item for instance. What the BVS eOPAC offers can also be reached through an app (the bibkat app). For this the following data has to be passed to the operator of the BVS eOPAC / bibkat app:

Reader number, reader barcode number, personal password (as a hash), age (for FSK/USK age-rating verification), items on loan, items reserved, messages from the library, fees / credits, wish list, at the reader's request: borrowing history, at the reader's request: email address

What happens if you do not entrust your data to us, or withdraw its use?

If you do not entrust your data to us, or withdraw its use, you can no longer borrow items.

How long is your data stored?

We store your personal data for as long as you want to borrow items or use our other services, and at most ten years after the last loan or use of our services, provided no mutual obligations remain.

What rights do you have regarding the data we store about you?

Within the applicable statutory provisions you have the right at any time to free information about the personal data we store about you, its origin and recipients and the purpose of processing, and where applicable a right to rectification, blocking or erasure of that data. Please contact the controller, whose contact details you will find at the top of this page.

On this and on further questions of data protection you can contact us at any time at the address given above. You also have a right to lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority if you have the impression that the website operator is not keeping to the data protection provisions.

Data protection supervision is, under § 45(1) KDG, the responsibility of the diocesan data protection officer of the Archdiocese of Freiburg:

Withdrawing your consent to data processing

Many data processing operations are possible only with your express consent (see § 6(1)(b) KDG). You can withdraw consent already given at any time. An informal message to us by email suffices. The lawfulness of the data processing carried out up to the withdrawal remains unaffected by it.

Right to data portability

You have the right to have data that we process automatically on the basis of your consent or in performance of a contract handed over to you or to a third party in a common, machine-readable format. Where you request the direct transfer of the data to another controller, this happens only in so far as it is technically possible.
