Reusable cloth face masks were provided for library staff, and should a visitor ever arrive without suitable protection, reusable cloth masks are available for adults and children alike, to keep.
Digital services
As partners in learning at every stage of life, libraries build students' research skills and information literacy through digital services, reference works covering the whole school curriculum, and learning resources for tutoring and exam preparation.
We fund the following digital services on an ongoing basis:
Free Comic Book Day
"With text and picture working together, clear reading structures and exciting, entertaining stories, comics are a valuable bridge between the picture book and the novel, and so an ideal way into the world of reading. Children's comics are used in schools, in reading promotion and in language learning, and even the smallest libraries would not be without them." (publishers' partnership behind the Gratis Comic Tag).
Reading café
Alongside home and school or work, the library is increasingly becoming the third place in people's lives. We therefore want visitors to feel at ease in the library and to stay a while — in the reading café, for instance — and we support the library by:
- providing the basic equipment as a one-off (crockery, cutlery and so on)
- paying for coffee, cocoa, milk, tea and the like
- funding the digital reading circle on an ongoing basis, together with Theben AG
- serving fresh waffles at special events, such as the 90th anniversary celebration in 2017 or the reopening at the end of September 2019.
Makerspace
Society, and with it libraries, is changing. Being able to handle new technology is essential for taking part in society in the future. Equal access to knowledge has long since ceased to be a matter of the written word alone. Digital equality of opportunity has become a significant factor for our society. A library's task is no longer only to provide access to information, but to open up access to knowledge. That includes a proper makerspace. So we support the library, for example, by:
- buying consumables for the 3D printer.
Buying items for the collection

Saint Nicholas
by Owingen Library
Nicholas of Myra — probably the most famous of saints and, as Saint Nicholas, the best loved — was known beyond all measure long before Christmas was commercialised from the 19th century onwards. Only a few decades ago Christmas was still a time of quiet reflection, a feast of love and of the birth of Jesus Christ. Today Christmas is the largest, most brutal and most devastating buying frenzy in the history of the world. Time to think back.
Charity, helpfulness and respect: Saint Nicholas stands as a symbol for passing on Christian values, and so is a genuinely good model for acting in a Christian spirit. Unlike the invented figure of Father Christmas, Nicholas really lived.
At our joint annual Saint Nicholas campaign with the Bonifatiuswerk, every borrower receives a small chocolate Saint Nicholas with a postcard once during the run-up to Christmas in December — while stocks last.
Magazines
Languages build bridges between cultures. PressReader gives you access to more than 7,500 current newspapers and magazines from around the world in a great many languages at home and on the go, as well as in the library.
Alongside it, a digital reading circle is offered on site, together with Theben AG.
